CUET Physics Semiconductor Electronics: Important Points to Remember

There are following important points in this chapter of Semiconductor Electronics.

  • Fermi energy is the maximum possible energy possessed by free electrons of a metal at absolute zero temperature its value is different for different elements.
  • n-type semiconductor is better than p-type semiconductor as electrons have more mobility than holes.
  • For a given voltage applied conduction current in n-type semiconductor is more than that of p-type semiconductor.
  • For a silicon p-n junction the barrier potential is about 0.7V, where as for a germanium p-n junction it is approximately 0.3V.
  • An ideal diode permit only unidirectional conduction.
  • Rectifier is a device which converts ac voltage to dc voltage. It is based on the fact that, a forward bias p-n junction
conducts and a reverse bias p-n junction does not conduct.
  • Zener diode is a special purpose diode in which the current suddenly increased in reverse bias condition after a certain voltage.
  • Break down voltage is that voltage at which break down of semiconductor occurs. For Ge is 25V and for Si is 35V.
  • Light emitting diode give out light radiations when forward biased.
  • Solar cells converts solar energy into electrical energy.
  • In a transistor circuit, the reverse bias is high as compared to the forward bias. So that it may exert a large attractive force on the charge carriers to enter the collector region.
  • Semiconductors are the current control devices.
  • The semiconductors devices are current sensitive devices.
  • Current due to minority carriers in the junction diode is independent of the applied voltage. It only depends upon the
    temperature of the diode.
  • Common collector amplifier is called power amplifier or current booster or emitter follower.
  • Transistor provides good power amplification when they are used in CE configuration.
  • A good emitter should have low work function, high melting point, high working temperature, high electrical and
    mechanical strength.
  • NOR and NAND gates are universal gates because they can be used to perform the basic logic function, AND, OR and NOT.
  • In modern day circuit, many logical gates or circuits are integrated in one single chip. These are known as  integrated circuits (IC).
  • Solar cells are also used in artificial satellite to operate the various electrical instruments kept inside the satellite.
  • Solar cells are used in calculators, wrist watches and light meters.
  • In Burglar – alarm systems, infrared LED’s are used.
  • Semiconductor devices are not to be heated for emission of electrons. They start operating instantly. This saves a lot of electric power.
  • Energy band diagram of conductor semiconductor & insulator

  • P-N Junction (At Equilibrium Condition)
