CUET Physics Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter: Important Points to Remember

There are following important points in this chapter of Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter.

  • Millikan’s experiment established that electric charge is quantised and he found the charge on an oil drop.
  • The photon-particle collision is elastic collision because the momentum and total energy is conserved.
  • If the radiation of frequency is equal or greater than that of threshold frequency photoelectric emission starts instantaneously in a time of the order of 10–9s or less.
  • In an electron microscope a beam of electron is used in place of ordinary light and focussing is done by electrostatic forces.
  • Cathode ray was discovered by sir William Crooke. This is the stream of fast moving electrons.
  • Matter wave represents the probability of finding a particle in space.
  • Electron microscope works on the phenomena of de-Broglie waves.

  • Rest mass of photon is zero.
  • Work function of metal generally measured in eV.
  • Photoelectric current is proportional to the number of photoelectrons emitted per second, so the number of photoelectrons emitted per second is directly proportional to the intensity of incident radiation.

  • The minimum negative potential Vo given to the plate E in figure for which the photoelectric current stops or become zero is called cut off or stopping potential.

  • Stopping potential is independent of the frequency of incident radiation.

  • For a given photosensitive material, there is a certain minimum cut off frequency v0 (called threshold frequency)
for which the stopping potential is zero.

  • Davisson and Germer observed diffraction effects with beams of electrons scattered by crystals and this peak diffraction of electrons observed at an angle 500 between the electron beam and diffracted electron beam and at 54V.
  • Gases at normal pressure act as bad conductors and when subjected to low pressure and high voltage they act as a conductors.

CUET Physics Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter: Important Graphs

1. Graphs represents the variation of maximum kinetic energy (EK) of the emitted electrons with frequency v in  Photoelectric effect correctly.

2. The anode voltage of a photocell is kept fixed. The wavelength of the light falling on the cathode is gradually changed. The plate current I of the photocell varies are follows.

CUET Physics Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter: Important Formulas

1. De – Broglie Hypothesis

2. Photoelectric Effect

CUET Physics Mock Test
